A Day in Brooklyn

Hello everyone,
Well it looks like I am the only one still updating this site. I shall have to get on those boys, because I know they have some good stories to tell!!!
Well this past weekend my friends and I went to Brooklyn on Saturday. We took the subway to Prospect Park which is absolutely wonderful. I say it is a smaller central park, but in some sense nicer because you don't have as many tourist and vehicles around it. When we got to the entrance there was a small flea market going on so we walked through that and bought some fruit. From there we began walking toward the lake with in it. A couple of my friends wanted to go paddle boating. So as they did that the rest of us walked around the lake and found a nice lawn to take a nap on. After that we left the park and walked straight out onto 16th street, which is actually the street where my Opa grew up. So literally about 2 blocks away from the park we found his house. It was a cute little brownstone and the neighborhood was in great condition. At the end of the street was a bar called Farrells which my Opa use to go to. After leaving the Prospect park area, we got on the subway and headed up to Williamsburg/ Bedford area(another part of Brooklyn). Here we were going to go to the Brooklyn brewery. Coincidently the boys were in the same area at the time so we met up with them and went to the brewery. It was so packed that we didn't actually stay for a beer. We wanted to walk back over the Brooklyn Bridge that evening so we headed back in to that area. First we stopped at the famous pizza place called Grimaldies, which if you ever go to Brooklyn you have to eat there. It is a little hole in the wall pizza place where there is normally an hour long wait outside just to get it, but it is definitely worth it!!! After we had stuffed ourselves with pizza we began our trek across the bridge. It was definitely not as long as I thought it would be, but had such a beatiful site of the city at sunset.
We got back into Manhattan around 8:30pm and got ready to go out becuase that is what you do in the city that never sleeps!!!!
Well now comes Sunday. My roomies and I were planning on getting up and go for a church service at St. Patricks Cathedral, but that fell through when our alarms went off at 7:30 and we had only gotten to bed at 4:30 :) So we slept a few more hours and got up and went to brunch at the sunflower diner. As we were walking back to the apt after breakfast we got this wackey idea that we should go kayaking on the Hudson River. So we headed to the west side and at Pier 40 there is a group that lets you kayak for free. It was so nice we kayaked for around 45mins ( more like rowed up and let the current push us back down. After kayak and being all wet, we walked around soho, got some frozen yogurt and came back to our area. That night my roomie and I decided to see Harry Potter and just have a relaxing night.

Well that pretty much sums up another weekend here in NY.

So we have just begun week 6 here in NY and with only 3 full weeks left there is still so much to do. This last Friday we had our Dinner/Dance Cruise on the Hudson River. We boarded the Spirit of the New Jersey with about 400 other Dreamers and cruised down the river with amazing music and sights of the Downtown Manhattan. The boat had 3 levels to it, the top being an open deck with views of everything. We started at Chelsea Piers and made our way under the Brooklyn Bridge and up to the Statue of Liberty. The cruise lasted about 3 hours so we finished at 11.
Saturday came where unfortunately we were all extremely lazy and did not get ready adn out for the day until 3pm. Shane, Matt, myself and my suite mate Megan decided to go to the The Museum of Modern Art but could not spend as much time as we would have like do to the fact that it closed early. On Sunday a few of us joined other girls on a "Sex and the City" tour around the city. Our staff leaders took us to different locations that the show filmed at.
For this upcoming weekend, we have already made plans to go to Brooklyn and spend the day in Prospect Park and Williamsburg. I will also stop by my Opa's childhood homes. Then in the evening we are going to walk back across the bridge while the sun is setting!!!

Well hope everyone is doing well and had fun in Tahoe!!!
Enjoy the pictures!!!!

Kennedy Performing Arts Center
Korean Memorial

Hi everyone,

The city has been really fun this week. It rained one day, but has been clear since! 4th of July was fun, we started by going to Coney Island for the annual hot dog eating contest. Matt Chris and I took the wrong train in the right direction, so it took about an hour to get there. We missed the hot dog eating contest, thank goodness, because the winner ate 64 hot dogs. Needless to say there was projectile vomit. Coney Island is like an old 1950's carnival. The old fairgrounds feel really American, maybe in a post war 50's way. We took a walk on the boardwalk, saw the Atlantic and what there was to see, got a famous Nathan's hot dog (the line was literally an hour wait, but we found Kaitlin & co. at the front!) and went to central park for the day.

Central park is fantastic. On the "Great Lawn" there's a stark contrast between the grass, trees, and the towering skyscrapers. The park is huge and easy to get lost in, with statues scattered throughout. It's a nice break from the city. Later that night we went to one of the poshest clubs in town, "Mansion," located in the West Village. Three different dance floors plus booths, etc.

The whole 3 day weekend involved going to central park laying in the sun. For those of you who haven't heard, on our first day walking through central park we stopped to wait for the slow girls (they walk soooooooooo slow), and we turn to our left and two feet away is a tall ripped guy pushing his kids in a stroller. Then Matt said "that's Hugh Jackman!" I couldn't believe it! NO ONE knew it was him except us! Matt asked him for a picture and he politely said in his Australian accent "Not while I'm with my family, but nice to meet you." It was great.

The park was a nice break from the constant grind of waking up early for work (something I'm not really used to). The internship is great though, and like I've said before, I love dressing up nice and walking down the street. In the mornings you see people walking with plain brown bags on their way to work. You know they just got their breakfast from a cafe like you because that's what all the cafe's package your food in. Then you'll pass the nasty homeless person talking to themselves, walk under a vent blowing warm air from a building, or pass a model walking the other direction that makes you want to turn around follow her (had one of those this morning...sigh) Anyway I can't complain.

This week is pretty packed. Tomorrow we have a seminar with the founder of our program. Thursday we're finally going to Top of the Rock, and Friday we have the much anticipated dinner boat cruise on the Hudson. Then there are only 3 weeks left before our return flight home :D I'll miss the city though. At least now I'll know what I'm missing when I'm in California.

That's all for now. I'll be on a couple more times this week.

Love you all,
Shane :)
